Space, Storage and Smiles

We're all smiles in this house! The plastic tarp has come down and our family room is feeling more spacious than ever. It's unbelievable how much more open the space feels now that the fireplace is gone.

You'll notice that the back wall hasn't been painted. That's because we'll be buying wall to wall Besta storage units from Ikea. Adam and I spent a few hours using their online planning tool until we were happy with the configuration. The tool, though it has a few "quirks", is pretty easy to use and really helps visualize the end product before whipping out the credit card (and tool belt).

Have a look-see below. We have more plans for this puppy - I'll be jazzing it up and making it look custom by adding cute doorknobs, installing crown molding at the top, and painting the back panels. By the time we're done with it, the cabinets will look like custom built-ins, without the expensive price tag.

Ikea Besta Storage Plan

What do you think?

There are a wealth of blog posts online documenting their IKEA hacks (in fact, if you're not already aware, there's a website devoted to this very purpose).

Some similar storage hacks that I found and used for inspiration:

These two come from Centsational Girl, a great design blog I often look to for ideas, inspiration and sheer reading pleasure:
